What does the Latin DECUS ET TUTAMEN mean?

This is Latin for “An ornament and a safeguard”, from Virgil’s Aeneid. It’s found on the old UK one pound coins. The motto here refers to the fact that the inscription serves both as a decorative feature and as a safeguard against the clipping of the coin’s edges.
